The Supreme Court has upheld a sentence of two years and six months in prison for Yu Young-jae, the ex-husband of actress Seonwoo Eun-sook, who forcibly molested her younger sister-in-law five times over seven months. The victim remained silent for a long time to protect her sister’s marriage, and after finding the courage to report, she suffered secondary victimization in the form of ridicule and criticism online.
Familial sexual violence has a structural problem in that the perpetrator is inside the family, making it difficult for the victim to report. This was a case in which attorney Noh Jong-eon of Law Firm Jonjae represented the victim from the first trial through the Supreme Court and helped bring public attention to the issue of familial sexual violence.
